Dr. Mark Gold was Heal the Bay’s first employee, joining the organization in 1988 as staff scientist.
He became its executive director in 1994. His extensive work with water quality and coastal natural resource
topics ranges from sewage treatment and legislative and environmental education issues to urban runoff,
contaminated fish and wetland restorations. As one of the region’s experts in urban runoff pollution, Dr.
Gold is involved in governmental water policy at the local, state and federal levels. He chairs the Santa Monica
Bay Restoration Project Steering Committee and sits on the EPA’s Urban Wet Weather Federal Advisory Committee.
He earned both bachelor and masters degrees in biology from UCLA, and received his doctorate from UCLA in
environmental science and engineering in 1994.
