Assemblymember
48th Assembly District

|
Assemblyman Wright is in his third term as a member of the California State Assembly. He was elected in
November 1996, re-elected two years later and then, in November 2000, re-elected again with more than 94
percent of the total vote. As Chair of the key Utilities and Commerce Committee, he has written legislation
to protect the state's electricity and natural gas customers from the massive rate hikes that have occurred
in some parts of the state. In a related area, it was his bill that ensured that utility customers couldn't
be switched to another service provider without their permission. He also has been a strong backer of legislation
to provide a stable-funding base for programs that provide assistance for low-income customers and senior citizens.
Assemblyman Wright had a distinguished record of public service spanning more than two decades even before he sought
elective office, serving as a district administrator for Congresswoman Maxine Waters, a field deputy for members of
the Los Angeles City Council, and a speechwriter for the Rev. Jesse Jackson. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Urban Studies at Pepperdine University.
