  UCLA Anderson Forecast presents
  DECEMBER 2013 ECONOMIC OUTLOOK
  Special Topic: Saving Our Future

Grand Horizon Ballroom, Covel Commons, UCLA
Thursday, December 5, 2013
7:30am - 11:30am

  (Registration from 7:30am to 8:30am)

  Overview
We are in a savings crisis. Our Federal government is not saving enough to pay for future Medicare and Social Security spending. Our state and local governments have not saved enough to pay for future pension and health care for their workforces, and there are vast numbers of Americans approaching retirement age with little or no private assets.

The United States is in the midst of a slow-rolling catastrophe caused by grossly inadequate national savings. Aging denial has always been a problem, but circumstances have changed to make our low personal savings rates even more inappropriate. With low real rates of interest, sluggish income growth and a surge in post-retirement health care spending, we need to be saving more, not less. Our most accurate (and most ignored) forecast is: “Next year you will be a year older.”
